Event Description
M. S. Swaminathan (1925–2023) was a world-renowned Indian geneticist and agricultural scientist widely hailed as the "Father of the Green Revolution in India". His pioneering work in the 1960s transformed India from a food-deficient nation reliant on imports into a self-sufficient one.
Summary
In collaboration with Nobel laureate Norman Borlaug, Swaminathan introduced high-yielding varieties (HYV) of wheat and rice to Indian farmers. This initiative more than doubled wheat production within a few years.
