Prof. Mangala Kapoor is an eminent Indian classical vocalist, academician, and Padma Shri awardee who served as the Head of the Vocal Music Department at Banaras Hindu University (BHU). A childhood acid attack survivor, she underwent over 36 reconstructive surgeries and turned to Hindustani classical music as a source of healing and strength. Trained in the prestigious Gwalior Gharana style, she earned the moniker "Kashi ki Lata" for her soulful singing.
Résumé
She dedicated three decades of her life to teaching at BHU's Mahila Maha Vidyalaya branch until her retirement in 2019, authoring five music books and guiding numerous PhD scholars. Today, her inspiring life legacy continues through a biographical film titled Mangla and the Professor Mangala Kapoor Foundation, which offers free music education to underprivileged and specially-abled children.
