Binod Bihari Mahto (1923–1991), affectionately remembered as Binod Babu, was an influential lawyer, social reformer, and political leader who served as the primary architect of the Jharkhand statehood movement. Deeply troubled by the socioeconomic exploitation of local communities, he founded the Shivaji Samaj in 1970 to eradicate social evils like the dowry system, child marriage, and alcoholism. He co-founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party in 1973, serving as its first president and successfully uniting tribal and non-tribal working-class populations under his revolutionary slogan "Padho aur Lado" (Study and Fight).
