Indian socialist revolutionary
Event Description
Shaheed Bhagat Singh (1907–1931) was a legendary Indian socialist revolutionary whose extraordinary bravery and intellectual depth made him one of the most iconic figures of the Indian independence movement. Born into a patriotic Sikh family, he grew up deeply affected by British colonial atrocities, most notably the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. He co-founded the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA), steering the revolutionary movement toward a secular, socialist vision aimed at completely overthrowing the British Raj and building an egalitarian society.
Summary
Bhagat Singh is best remembered for his strategic acts of defiance, including the assassination of British police officer John Saunders to avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai, and the throwing of non-lethal smoke bombs inside the Central Legislative Assembly in 1929. Instead of fleeing, he and his comrade Batukeshwar Dutt courted arrest, famously shouting the slogan "Inquilab Zindabad" (Long Live the Revolution) to use the courtroom as a platform to awaken the nation.
