Dr. Vikram Sarabhai was a visionary Indian physicist and innovator revered as the "Father of the Indian Space Programme". In India, National Remote Sensing Day is celebrated every year on 12 August to directly honor and commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai. The day is observed to highlight the vital importance of satellite data, geographic information systems (GIS), and earth observation technologies in national development.

Summary

Beyond space exploration, Dr. Sarabhai was a phenomenal institution builder who deeply transformed India's educational and industrial ecosystem. He co-founded the premier Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) to provide world-class management skills to research as well as cultural institutions like the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts. He also chaired the Atomic Energy Commission of India and mentored brilliant young minds, including the future President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
