UWC Mahindra College, Pune
Indian innovator, environmentalist
Event Description
Vinisha Umashankar is a prominent Indian innovator, environmentalist, and UNICEF India Youth Advocate from Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. She rose to global prominence as a teenager after inventing the "Iron Max," a mobile, solar-powered ironing cart designed to replace traditional charcoal-heated irons. Motivated by the severe air pollution and deforestation caused by millions of street vendors using charcoal across India, Vinisha engineered a clean energy alternative that utilizes rooftop solar panels to power steam irons. Her invention not only eliminates harmful emissions but also enhances the livelihoods of vendors by integrating features like mobile charging stations, making her a leading face for youth-led climate solutions.
Summary
Vinisha has earned widespread international acclaim for her impactful vision. At just 14 years old, she became the youngest finalist for Prince William’s prestigious Earthshot Prize in 2021, and later that year, she delivered a powerful, viral speech at the COP26 Climate Summit, urging world leaders to "stop talking and start acting.
